Part 1

  1. Study time

What time do you like to study?

As for me, I try to study at night when it is quieter as I can be more efficient and productive when there is no noise around me.

Whats the best time for you to take classes?

I would like all my classes arranged in the mornings because I seem to be more quick-minded in the morning, which means I acquire knowledge faster, and on the other hand, I find that most teachers are more clear-minded, which means they can better deliver their classes in the morning as well.

Do you like to study alone or with your friends?

I think I prefer to study with friends because I could have some discussions with them when I come across something I do not understand. Plus, I believe I won’t give up easily on my study if I have someone who studies with me.

Who do you usually study with?

Well, I usually study with my best friend who is also my roommate. As we basically go to the same classes every day, we often go to the school library to study in the evening.

Part 2 & 3

  Part 2

Describe a piece of old equipment in your home

  You should say:

  what it is

  how often you use it

how long you have had it

and explain why it is important in your home.

Well, to tell you the truth that we have thrown away quite a number of old equipment and purchased some new ones for our home as we moved 3 times over the past two decades. However, we still keep one old piece in our home, and that is an old chair made of wood.

It was my grandpas favorite furniture before he passed away because he used it quite a lot. I remember it was in 2003 when my parents got that chair for him after we moved to a new apartment with a really nice balcony as my parents wanted him to sit in the chair at the balcony and enjoy some tea and newspapers with sunshine after lunch. So far weve had it for almost 15 years.

You know, it is such an important furniture in our home as each time when we see it, it reminds us of our grandpa and those rewarding lectures he gave us. For instance, one of the most meaningful lectures he used to give us is on how to get along well with friends and colleagues, and what he often said was to understand others and tolerate others’ shortcomings whenever any conflicts arise.

On top of that, it also reminds me of the time when he used to take care of me while my parents went away for business. And what I love the most about that is he would cook some special dishes for me. Besides, he would also take me to a nearby supermarket for some delicious snacks whenever I asked.

Eg:Mary has been feeling rather upset for quite a few weeks after her grandma passed away.

Eg:It seems that her only requirement for renting a new apartment is that she needs it to have a huge balcony.

Eg: Professor Lee likes to have some rewarding talks with his students because he believes that those talks can benefit students in their life.

Eg:Despite the fact that he has many shortcomings, he is still the most suitable candidate for this position.

  Part 3题目

In your country, where do people usually buy furniture for their homes?

Well, I think most people would buy furniture from stores in which they can physically feel and touch the furniture of different styles, fabric as well as colors and then finally decide which one they want to purchase.

Eg:Although he looks physically fit, he still suffers from some mental problems.

Eg: Not surprisingly, his only concern is the fabric whenever he needs to shop for clothes.

What factors do people need to consider when buying furniture for their home?

Well, I suppose there are quite a number of factors people have to consider when buying furniture, such as the size of the furniture, because they need to make sure the furniture they purchase will fit the space in their home, or the style of the furniture because they also need to make sure that it fits the overall style of most of the furniture at their home.

  ①a number of: 短语;一些  许多

Eg:Local government has been conducting a number of surveys to make a policy which is aimed to protect the legal right of taxi drivers.

Eg:His parents are pretty satisfied with his the overall performance although he still failed one subject this semester.

Why do people like to buy expensive furniture?

Well, there must be numerous reasons to explain that, but I think the most common one is that people regard the quality of the furniture as their first priority, which means they believe that those expensive furniture will be more durable than cheap ones.

Eg:As a mother, her first priority is always her 2 kids, so she quit a well-paid job and went back home to take care of the kids.

Eg:They still keep some old equipment at home as those old stuff are really durable.

What is the difference between the furniture at home and the furniture in the office?

Well, if it is a piece of furniture for home, it is supposed to be quite cozy whenever people use it at home, and its design and style should also fit well with the overall decoration of the home. However, a piece of furniture for an office should always be able to meet people’s certain needs at work.

Eg:Visitors could sit in those cozy benches for a rest when they get tired in the park.

Eg:Due to the unique decoration at this Brazilian restaurant, it has been attracting more and more young people since it officially opened.

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

The maps show the campus layout now and a plan for development.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

  Write at least 150 words.

The two maps show the current layout of a school and the plan for its changes. The most noticeable change is projected to be the replacement of many areas of vegetation with teaching buildings and public facilities.

At present, a large area of land at the northwest side of the campus is covered with trees. A cluster of many other trees can also be seen at the southwest corner. A rectangular teaching building can be seen in the centre of the map while other buildings and facilities are mainly located at the east. To be specific, three buildings, of which one is for biology and another two are for genetics, lie on the southeast side of the schoolyard; the car park is on the other side of the east.

In the future, much of the vegetation is expected to be cut down to make room for new buildings, such as a genetics building and a chemistry building in the northwest; and a triangular vegetation field will be changed into a new staff car park. Meanwhile, the original rectangular building close to the staff car park will be converted to an L-shaped one. What is more, the existing car park would be exclusively used for students and the biology building is likely to be rebuilt into a larger one.

  Word count: 218

①the most noticeable change is …

  ②is projected to… 预计……

③at the northwest side of …

More and more people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Thanks to the globalisation and trade liberalisation in most parts of the world, customers today can always enjoy a wide range of choices when purchasing different kinds of goods or services. And it seems that famous brands are much more favoured by an increasing number of people. There are several reasons for this and I regard the trend as a positive one.

Usually, the famous brands stand for renowned prestige, elegant tastes and sumptuous life styles, which exactly fit the psychological needs of those who badly desire the feel of being admired. For these people, famous brands, especially the luxury ones, fabricate an illusion that they are somehow connected with the upper class, owning importance and success as well.

Moreover, famous brands always boasts some superior features such as high quality or humanised designs. Therefore, customer loyalty is more liable to be cultivated. Once a client gets used to a certain product or service, he is unwilling to change for an alternative. The iOS operation system can well address the phenomenon, as most iPhone users will not feel at ease when the system is changed to an Android system --- even if the price and functions of the two phones are quite similar.

From my perspective, the trend can bring more advantages. Since every person has the right to strive for a happier life, there is no fault for one to try pricey things that makes them satisfied, as long as the payment is legal and will not jeopardise the future life. Companies also earn more money from the trend and in turn stimulate innovations and varieties to keep and enlarge their consumer groups, thus gaining more competence while forming a virtuous cycle with customers.

To sum up, whether people buy famous brands to compensate their poor self-esteem or to pursue the high quality of the famous brands, it is justifiable to choose those high-ends on condition that they are within one’s purchasing ability.

  .

  ②prestige: n.

  ③fabricate: v.

  ④boast: v.

  ⑥jeopardise: v.

  ⑧self-esteem: n. 自尊

Amateur Naturalists

You should spend about 20 minutes on Question 14-26 which are based on Reading Passage below.

  A

Tim Sparks slides a small leather-bound notebook out of an envelope. The books   yellowing pages contain beekeeping notes made between 1941 and 1969 by the   late Walter Coates of Kilworth, Leicestershire. He adds it to his growing pile of local journals, birdwatchers lists and gardening diaries, Were uncovering about one major new record each month,” he says, “I still get surprised. Around two centuries before Coates, Robert Marsham, a landowner from Norfolk in the east of England, began recording the life cycles of plants and animals on his estate when the first wood anemones flowered, the dates on which the oaks burst into leaf and the rooks began nesting. Successive Marshams continued compiling these notes for 211 years.
